We ask that you provide us with the most truthful and up to date information about your skills, personality, background and interests. Don’t be shy or undersell yourself, this is your chance to show a camp director why they should hire you. Don’t worry, your information can be updated throughout the entire process, so if you gain a coaching experience, put it on there. Camp directors want to know everything that you have done and how you have become the person you are today.
Once you have completed your application, you will be prompted to let us know when you are available to speak with one of our representatives. This is an conversation which can take place either in person or Skype. During this chat we will go over any questions that you or your parents may have about the program. We will also ask you questions to make sure you would be an excellent camp counselor at a summer camp in America. At American Summers we want to make sure that you are 100% comfortable and confident about the adventure you will have this summer.
Now that your interviewer has written up your responses, you will receive word back about your acceptance onto the program. Upon acceptance you will be supplied with our guidelines to let you know what we are in need of when it comes to your next steps. Items will include getting the proper documentation together, payments, and that your application is top notch.
Once American Summers have received all of your payments, documents, and your application has been throughly looked over, you can be put forward to camp directors. There is no rule on how long it might take to be hired by a camp directors. For some people it takes weeks, others months, and you may have multiple interviews with different camps. But as long as you stay in communication with American Summers and respond to any emails from camp directors you will be sorted. During your interview with a camp director you should be yourself and make sure you are not in an area with any distractions.
You’ve done it! The camp director loved your enthusiasm and passion over Skype, and wants you to be a part of their team this summer! Drop them an email to thank them and see if they have a staff Facebook group for this summer. You can get to know your future camp friends now. Now that you know you have been accepted for camp, you must apply for your visa with the US Government. You will have to attend an interview at the US Embassy in London or Belfast before your visa is granted and you must have the correct paperwork with you. American Summers will provide you with step-by-step guidelines and a checklist of what you need to do in order to make your time at the US Embassy as effective as possible.
Once you have received your visa back from the US Embassy you are all set and ready to purchase your flights out to your camp. If you need help in finding which flight would be best for you, let us know! We have been in your shoes before and know that it can be nerve racking buying your flight out to America. But once you’ve got your tickets, you can dust off those suitcases in the attic and get your packing on.
You nailed the interview with your camp director, got your visa accepted by the US Embassy and have now touched down on American soil. Make sure you pay attention during staff training and provide the campers with a summer of a lifetime. But before you get carried away with all of the summer fun, make sure you give your parents a jingle upon arrival. We worry too, so we wouldn’t mind an email or carrier pigeon message.
