Frequently Asked Questions

For You
What makes you so great

At American Summers we have been in the summer camp industry for over 50 years. We have been campers, cabin counselors, worked in kitchens, hired staff, and have also worked up to become directors. We aim to create a stream line process which provides you with a friendly atmosphere and not the factory line coldness. We know this process can be stressful, and will do what we can do make it as easy as possible.

Am I too late to apply

We normally close our application process in the spring time. So as long as you are on the program before April/March time we will be able to help you out. We do ask that you get your documents in on a timely manner so we can prepare your application for camp directors to view.

How old do I need to be

We ask that you are at least 18 years old by June 1st in order to be eligible work in America.

Are there requirements

We do have requirements in order to be eligible to work in America which are as follows:

-Be at least 18 years old by June 1st

-Enjoy working and being around children

-Produce a clean police background check

-Be available to head out to America before June 18th

-Be available to stay out in America for a minimum of 9 weeks

-Complete a medical form to ensure that you are fit and healthy to work abroad

-Able to be a big brother or sister to campers 24/7

-Be outgoing, adventurous, patient, full of energy, and ready to commit to your job

-Excited about traveling to a new country with different cultures

Time in the USA

We ask that you are available for a minimum of 9 weeks and you are able to head out before June 18th. This is because camps normally open during this time of year and run for a 9 week period. But you will be able to travel around America for up to a month after your contract has been completed.

Visa Process

The visa process can be one of the more nerve racking experiences, but try to not stress out too much. In the springtime we will provide you with easy to follow guidelines on what you will need to be successful in your visa application. You will need to travel to either London or Belfast to get your visa, even if you have been to camp before.

I have to be interviewed

At American Summers we do have a interview process before any money is put down to ensure that you will be a great addition to camp Your other interviews will take place over Skype to get you ready for your chat with camp directors. Remember we are people too so don’t be too nervous, and always be yourself.

Where will I work

The majority of the summer camps that we work with are on the East Coast of America, but we do not place people at camps based on location requests. This is because we rather put you forward at a camp which suits your skills, experience, background, and personality better then in a location at a camp you may not be as compatible with.

Hiring Process

There is no hard or fast rule of when you will be hired by a summer camp. The process depends on how fast you are at providing us with your documents and how your experience and availability matches up with the available positions at camps. Additionally summer camp directors all hire depending on their needs at that specific time. They might not look someone of your skills until the spring time.

Am I going to a fun camp

Yes! We have been to all of the summer camps that we work with and have spoken to counselors about their experiences at camp. Everyone at American Summers has been to summer camp and wouldn’t put you forward to a summer camp that we ourselves wouldn’t want to go to for the summer.

What if I don't get hired

In that unlikely event, you will receive a full refund of your fees that you have paid to American Summers. Unfortunately we cannot refund any of the 3rd party costs such as you police check, as it was not paid directly to us.

References?

Your references can be completed by anyone who has known you in a professional environment. You can have your teachers, parents of the children you babysat for, employers, or coaches fill out the form. We will not be able to accept any form completed by a friend or family member.

Camp with my friend

We place staff at camps based on their skills, personality, availability and experience. We cannot by any means guarantee that you will be placed at the same camp as your friend. This is because a camp director may only be looking to fill one spot or has already hired someone with similar skills as your friend. Additionally some camp directors do not like friends going to the same camp as that means you are less likely to branch out to your new experiences.

Renewing my passport

Yes, you will need to get it renewed ASAP! Go go go!! We ask that your passport is valid for at least 3 months after your return back home. So if your passport is expiring before or after the summer you will need to get a new one.

Medical conditions

If you have ever had a medical issue we ask that you provide us with all past and present information about your health. Since every experience and condition is different, we ask that you contact American Summers with information on any present or pre-existing medical conditions.

For Your Parents
Why American Summers

At American Summers we have been in the summer camp industry for over 50 years. We have held almost all of the positions that there are at camp, and have loved every moment of it. We will provide your child with a safe, honest and friendly experience with us. At American Summers we are in the business of providing an excellent service and want others to share in our summer camp experience.

Application deadline

We open our applications for the upcoming summer in September. We do this so future camp counselors can get a head start on their documents and application.  The earlier your child applies the better opportunities he/she has at the start of a camp directors hiring process.

Age requirements

We have a minimum age requirement of 18 years old by June 1st. This is a US Department of State visa regulation.

Program requirements

In order to be apart of the American Summers program your child must be eligible to the following:

-Be at least 18 years old by June 1st

-Enjoy working and being around children

-Produce a clean police background check

-Be available to head out to America between the dates before June 18th

-Be available to stay out in America for a minimum of 9 weeks

-Complete a medical form to ensure that you are fit and healthy to work abroad

-Able to be a big brother or sister to campers 24/7

-Be outgoing, adventurous, patient, full of energy, and ready to commit to your job

-Excited about traveling to a new country with different cultures

Length of stay

Your child will need to be available for a minimum of 9 weeks in order to be accepted onto the program. We ask that your child is able to head out to American before June 18th. This is because camps run for this duration during the summer and camp directors need staff who are able to commit for the entire time.

Visa Assistance

The visa process can be a stressful part of the process, but at American Summers we will provide your child with the support that they need. Your child will need to travel to either London or Belfast for an appointment with a US Embassy Official. This process happens during the spring time, so closer to that time period we will provide your child with the necessary details.

Interview process

Once a application has been completed we will contact your child to ensure that he/she will be a great addition to any summer camp team. If successful, the only other interviews your child will have will be over Skype with American Summers and then another Skype conversation with their future employers.

Where in the USA

We will not place your child at a camp based on location. In our experience people who sent to camp based on location didn’t always have a successful summer. So instead we will put your child forward to a summer camp in which we feel she/he will have the best experience with based on their skills and experience.

Hiring Process

Unfortunately there is no hard or fast rule when your child will know about what camp they are going to. This is because every summer camp’s hiring process is slightly different from each other, and there may be more steps to take then others. If your child has completed all of their steps in timely manner then we will be able to put your child forward to camp directors sooner rather then later.

Summer Camps

All of the summer camps that we work with are accredited by the American Camping Association. By being at a camp that is nationally accredited means that your child will be going to a camp which holds itself to a high standard of fun and safety. We have also visited all of these camps to ensure a happy staff.

Not hired

If we are unable to find your child a job at a summer camp, then we will provide them with a full refund of their fees. We are unable to refund any 3rd party costs to them, as it was not paid directly to American Summers.

Reference form

We ask that all reference forms are completed in a professional manner. Unfortunately we cannot accept any references completed by friends or family members. We will accept reference forms that are completed by people such as coaches, teachers, employers, etc.

Going with a friend

We cannot promise that we will place your child at a camp with his/her partner.  This is because summer camp directors look for specific experiences in each applicant before hiring. If your child has the skill that the camp is looking for but his/her partner does not, then we would ask your child to take the job. As we cannot guarantee a 2nd job opportunity will come there way. It’s worthwhile to remind your child that they are out there to be apart of new cultures and experiences.

Passport Info

We ask that your child’s passport is valid for at least 3 months upon returning back home. So if it is expiring before or during the summer, then they will need to get it renewed as soon as possible.

Medical requirements

In some cases medical conditions by being in a new environment with an increase of responsibility can trigger a condition that your child has had in the past. As every experience and condition is different, we ask that you contact American Summers with information on any present or pre-existing medical condition.
