What Should I Bring?

November 1, 2015

Every summer camp will have its own packing list that they will give out to the counselors before arrival. But just in case you can’t wait until you are given your packing list here are a few items you’ll need to stuff in that duffle bag.

  • 10-12 pairs of socks as most camps to not allow sandals to be worn unless at the waterfront
  • 12-14 pairs of underwear, you gotta stay fresh
  • 1-2 Sweatshirts, for the cold summer nights
  • 1-2 sweatpants, for campfires and chilly evenings
  • A raincoat, although camp is mostly sunny there will be a rainy day or two
  • T-shirts, if you are going to a camp with a uniform you will only need to bring enough t-shirts for your days off/nights off
  • 8-10 pairs of athletic shorts, remember you will want something that is comfy and easy to run around in
  • 2-3 pairs of long pants, you camp may have dances so you’ll want to dress up for them
  • 1-2 nice shirts, for nights off or special camp festivities
  • 1-2 comfy trainers, you will buy more out in America, but just make sure you can run around for days in them
  • 1-2 swim suits, ladies you’ll want to check what your camp’s policy is on two-pieces
  • PJs, onesies are fair game to bring, but remember that summer nights can be hot
  • Your country’s flag to hang up proudly in your bunk
  • Pictures of your friends and family to put up by your bunk
  • A funny costume, be it a tutu, mullet wig, or your Hulk mask, there will be a time or 5 that you’ll use it

Things that you can pick up from your local store, so don’t stress if you forget

  • Clothes, if you forget your red shirt, no worries, America is full of clothing stores
  • Sunglasses, a nice item to have on those sunny days, usually can pick up a cheap pair for $5
  • A hat, if you are working up on the fields all day it might be a good idea to get some extra protection for your dome.
  • Toiletries – No need to lug your huge container of shampoo across an ocean, just bring a travel size one.
  • Sunscreen, if you camp doesn’t provide it, then it’s a easy grab at any convenient store.

Remember there is no need to bring towels and loads of items, most summer camps have a Wal-Mart or Target nearby where you can purchase these items. Almost every international counselor has said to me that they wish they didn’t bring half of the stuff they did. You can and will buy a lot of things out in America, so as hard as it might be, PACK LIGHT!
